St. Michael’s Weekly News – August 30th, 2023

Dear People of St. Michaels,

It has been an interesting week watching them tear off the roof of St. Veronica’s, the same with the shakes on Larsen Hall and then repair the space where Larsen Hall meets our sanctuary. All has gone well and been worked through rather quickly. When St. Veronica was stripped down, we thought it might need an additional layer of plywood and it did. In addition, some rafter ends were rotted and needed trimming and repairs. St. Veronica’s Hall is our first and oldest building, being completed in 1907, when our own history book, Accustomed to Hope records its use:

“On Sunday—June 2, 1907—more than one hundred and twenty-five people filed into seats and dozens of others clustered in the vestibule and on the porch in anticipation of the 11 a.m. service…There spanking new jewel box Parish House was ready for use. [This] is a beautiful building about 34X24 in ‘weathered shingles’ on the outside and cream burlap set in yard square panels by a redwood moulding, the ceiling being well pitched…Its cost will be about $2000.” (page 42).

So that would make St. Veronica’s about 116 years old. It was our first place of worship (the sanctuary being completed in 1911), served as the main social and parish hall and has lovingly used in so many ways. Even since my arrival, the original wood floor was inspected and then given a new finish, realizing that it could be beautiful and serve into the future if redone at that time. The refinished floor and the redecorating of St. Veronica’s at that time made it an even more appealing place for our own use and the use of so many groups. We then wisely used a grant from our diocese to install the large screen and equipment into the hall to make it a “Zoom” conference room, for our use transitioning out of COVID and for all the groups meeting there as well. It is smart thing and a joyful thing that we preserve this space, keep it safe and dry, for future use. We are fortunate it could be done at this time and St. Veronica’s and Larsen Hall will be used this weekend by the Paul Bunyan Days group for the “Old Fashion Dress Review” at 2 pm on Saturday, September 2nd.

We are able put a new roof on St. Veronica’s and do repairs over the office, Larsen Hall and the sacristy at this time because of reserves we have, but I hope you will join me and members of our Vestry (and even distant members of St. Michaels) is giving a special gift toward this repair of our facility. We are being careful stewards of a great gift given to us all that we use wisely and well.

(Special gifts and offerings can include 2023 Roof Campaign in the check memo!)

In Christ,

Pastor Randy Knutson

Recycling and Trash Concerns at St. Michaels

Dear Members of the Parish, we are all adjusting to a new reality in our homes and around our community concerning trash, recycling and compost; the three categories of left over material from our lives and gatherings. Recently, we even received the first of three warnings concerning black trash bags in our recycling container: after three times, a $25 dollar fee. So we need to be more careful about refuse after our meals, coffee hour etc. The main concern seems to be with recycling and compost.

Many of us had the mantra of ‘recycling’ repeated to us again and again, but we live in a different world now where less is able to be recycled and some things we might have thought to recycle should instead go into compost, including used paper plates, napkins and paper cups. These should go now into ‘compost’, not recycling. Compost can also include left over food, coffee grounds, fruit peelings, and other plant based waste; along with grass clippings and other plant trimmings.

Recycling needs to include only clean paper, cardboard boxes, CA redemption bottles and cans (rinsed and dried), plastic containers (#1-#7) and glass. As we found out, these should also not be in any kind of garbage bag.

Trash includes so many things, but unfortunately includes styrofoam cups and many other things that aren’t ‘compost’ and can’t be recycled. It seems like a waste to throw some things away, but what isn’t ‘recycle’ or ‘compost’ needs to go into this container.

Thank you as we all work together to clean up after our times of great fellowship and worship.
